Family home of the missionary patrons Mayerhofer
Mondsee am Mondsee, Oberösterreich, Österreich
Although the house has changed hands and found a new use, it should not be forgotten that it was the childhood home of the brothers Matthias (born 1922) and Franz (born 1932) Mayerhofer, both of whom are members of the Order of the Heart. Jesus missionaries entered and worked as missionaries Matthias was ordained a priest in Innsbruck in 1949 and celebrated his primacy in Mondsee on July 31, 1949. On October 4, 1950, he left home to begin his mission as a missionary in the South Pacific in Papua New Guinea. It was not until April 1961 that he returned home after 11 years.
In the meantime, his younger brother Franz had been ordained to the priesthood. He traveled to Congo on May 13, 1961 as a missionary. His brother Matthias followed him in 1962. Their field of application was the diocese of Bokungu-Ikela. From 1963 to 1982 P. Matthias was general vicar. In 1997, both had to leave the country because of political unrest, but returned soon back. P. Matthias died in his place of work on September 23, 1998 from heart failure. For health reasons, Franz spent his last years at the Liefering Abbey in Salzburg, where he died on October 17, 2015.6)
In the early 1950s, in memory of the fact that two sons were serving as missionaries in the Universal Church, they had a Sacred Heart stow on the house. It was Franz Mayerhofer's wish that the statue - if the house should ever be sold, what has since happened - remain in the family's possession. The statue is now kept by his nephew Herbert Mayerhofer.
