"Ashtanga yoga is a philosophy of life, a way of life, a journey whose goal is to find oneself.
The Sanskrit word "yoga" means "to unite," referring to the connection of body, mind, and soul.
"Ashtanga" means eight-limbed path.
One of these limbs is the physical exercises (asanas). These exercises are connected through dynamic movement elements (vinyasa).
The foundation of the entire system is a special, deep breathing technique (ujjayi breathing) - each asana is guided by the breath. Additionally, certain muscle locks (bandhas) are held, which strengthen our core and facilitate our balance.
Focus points (drishtis) keep us concentrated.
Through the dynamics of yoga, we achieve an optimal heating of the body, which helps us to stretch and cleanse the body.
At the same time, we practice through concentration, meditation, and even breathing to bring body, mind, and soul back into balance.
Besides practicing postures, yoga also includes behaviors such as non-violence, mindfulness towards oneself and others, love of truth, self-discipline, breathing exercises, meditation...
Ashtanga yoga, like many other styles of yoga, has its origins in India. This ancient form of yoga was documented by the Indian sage Patanjali and has been disseminated since the 1930s by the father of Ashtanga yoga, Pattabhi Jois, in Mysore.
Ashtanga yoga is actually suitable for anyone who is drawn to its content.
In its final execution, Ashtanga yoga is a very dynamic and powerful form of yoga. However, the degree of dynamism should be adapted to individual needs." - Margit Brandstetter
