Project - VIA SALIS theme trail - paths of salt

From 2013 to 2018, the "Interessengemeinschaft Mitterbergstollen" ( IGM ) restored a total of 12 tunnel portals with considerable effort (118 work assignments totalling 742 hours). All of this was only possible thanks to free labour and was financed exclusively by donations.

Existing "mouth holes" were restored and tunnel entrances that no longer existed were located and restored.

The location of the salt tunnels is spread over the two Ischl salt deposits - the "Lauffner Salzstock" and the "Pernecker Salzlager".

The chronology of the excavations on the Ischler Salzberg stretches from 1563 ( Mitterberg Stollen ) to 1895 ( Lauffen Heir Adit ).
The aim of the IGM is to present salt mining in Perneck in general and the individual salt tunnels and operating sites in particular and to make them accessible to the general public.

A journey through time in the footsteps of the miners

Over 450 years ago, miners dug deep tunnels into the mountains in Bad Ischl. Today, an adventurous journey for the whole family, for school classes and any other type of group excursion takes you to where the men once extracted the salt from the mountain.

Come with us on a journey into the past!

Along the themed trail, you will visit historical sites that were once of great importance to the Salzkammergut.
