Historical tours and a calligraphy exhibition at the Bärenriedlau Hut

A special cultural and natural experience awaits hikers in the Kalkalpen National Park: At the over 300-year-old Bärenriedlau Hut in the southern Sensengebirge Mountains—which is maintained by the Austrian Federal Forestry Office and will once again be open for free tours this August and September—history, nature, and the art of beautiful handwriting come together.

From August 13 to September 6, 2026, National Park Ranger Elisabeth Humer will be at the hut Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. During free guided tours, she takes visitors on an exciting journey through the region’s history. She’ll share insights into the lifestyle of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and trace the transformation from the former imperial hunting grounds to today’s wildlife sanctuary in the Kalkalpen National Park. No registration is required for the guided tours.

“Being on the Path”—an exhibition that invites you to pause and reflect
At the same time, artist Andrea Henriette Felber is transforming the hut and the trailhead into an extraordinary open-air gallery. Under the theme “Being on the Path,” she presents handwritten spiritual texts and calligraphy on paper.
