Mountain biking in the Salzkammergut is more than just sport. Between lakes, mountains and alpine pastures, a biking experience is created that combines landscape, exercise and joie de vivre in a special way. From enjoyable rides to challenging tours, the region is diverse, authentic and full of character.
There are regions that you drive. And there are regions that you experience. Mountain biking in the Salzkammergut belongs to the second category. If you pedal here, you don't just roll through a landscape, but into a world of dark forests, rugged rock faces, quiet alpine pastures and lakes that keep flashing between the trees like a promise. Every ascent is challenging, every metre of altitude opens up new perspectives, every descent carries that special feeling that only great biking days trigger: Freedom, flow and the desire to ride even further. And that's what makes mountain biking in the Salzkammergut so special.
Between the Dachstein, Traunsee, Wolfgangsee and the many quieter corners of the region lies not a staged bike backdrop, but an evolved cultural landscape with character. Forest roads lead up to panoramic huts, alpine trails combine panoramic views with sporting challenges and small trails complement the classic touring experience. As a bike region, the Salzkammergut doesn't have to be loud to make an impression - it draws its own strength from its landscape, history, movement and diversity. Enjoyable rides along the water, long days on an e-MTB, challenging mountain bike tours with metres of elevation gain for the legs and far-reaching views for the mind - all of this is closer together here than you might think. Refreshment stops, regional cuisine and genuine encounters round off the biking experience. Not pretentious, not overdrawn, but powerful, down-to-earth and full of joie de vivre. Feel the sensation of really being out there on the road - between nature, culture and a region that you don't just cross, but get to know a little more intensively with every pedal stroke.
There are places in the Salzkammergut that don't explain themselves at first glance. The Rettenbachtal is one such place. Wild, steeped in history and with a quiet power that lingers. Anyone travelling here quickly realises that it's not just about a path through the landscape, but about immersing yourself in a space that combines nature, movement and history in a special way. With the reopening of the historic link between Rettenbachalm and Blaa Alm, this natural space can now be experienced again - for hikers, mountain bikers and anyone who wants to experience the Salzkammergut outdoors. The approximately six-kilometre-long section is part of a historic brine pipeline route towards Altaussee and was closed for several years. The fact that this section is now accessible again is the result of intensive preparatory work and broad cooperation. Hazardous areas were cleared, deadwood was removed and specific measures were taken on the basis of a risk analysis to enable safe use. The Austrian Federal Forests, the Salzkammergut Tourism Association, the Ausseerland Salzkammergut Tourism Association, the Ausseerland Regional Association and Salinen Austria AG were all involved. Ongoing inspections and further safety measures are also planned for the future. For the region, the opening of the Rettenbachtal is therefore far more than just an infrastructural improvement. It shows how natural space, responsibility and the tourist experience can be considered together.
The Rettenbachtal valley is not just a path, but a piece of cultivated landscape. Between striking rock faces, dense forests and vast alpine pastures, the Salzkammergut shows a side of itself that doesn't have to be loud to make an impression. Around the Rettenbachalm, one of the largest low mountain pastures in Europe, there is a mixture of vastness, unspoilt nature and movement that makes the Salzkammergut so unmistakable. It is a landscape that can slow you down and at the same time makes you want to keep going, keep travelling and get even deeper into this terrain of forest, alpine pasture and rock.
