The World Cultural Heritage site Hallstatt is considered one of the most beautiful villages on a lake in the world. Embedded in the mountain and lake landscape of the Holiday Region Dachstein Salzkammergut, the small village enchants with its unique traditional charm.

The World Heritage site Hallstatt

If you start at the beginning of the main street "Seestraße" towards the city centre, you will get your first beautiful view of Lake Hallstatt and the traditional houses in Hallstatt. It is best to deviate a little from the main road and explore the small alleys that lead through the World Heritage site. This is where history and tradition are hidden.
The market place in Hallstatt is certainly famous, as it was also copied in Asia, more precisely in China in the province of Guangdong. But to end the tour through Hallstatt there would be a mistake. Unique in the world and very steeped in history is the bone house at the catholic church. If you want to delve even deeper, visit the Hallstatt museum.

Archaeology at the salt mountain

A must-do in Hallstatt is definitely the drive or hike (20 minutes) up the salt mountain. There you will find archaeological findings from the Hallstatt period and the oldest salt mine in the world.
A little more courage is required on the Skywalk and the World Heritage viewing platform, which is made of glass and hovers 200 metres above Hallstatt. From there you have a breathtaking view of the World Heritage region Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut and Lake Hallstatt as its centre.

Active in winter

Hallstatt offers not only culture and history, but also numerous nature experiences. On a winter hike in the Echern valley you can enjoy the peace and quiet and nature to the full. The Freesports Arena Dachstein Krippenstein is only a 10-minute drive from Hallstatt, the family ski area Dachstein West in Gosau at Dachstein is only 15 minutes away. Skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing or ski touring, you will certainly get your money's worth.

Hallstatt is a traditional World Heritage site, embedded in the beautiful landscape of the Holiday Region Dachstein Salzkammergut. A holiday in Hallstatt means history, culture, tradition as well as experiencing the natural heritage. More information about Hallstatt can be found at
