From the nursery to the museum
VESPA.... These 5 letters became a passion for Thomas Buchegger from Upper Austria. He was already riding a 50 Spezial and 50 S at the age of 16.
As he had always wanted to be a bit different, it was the ideal vehicle at the time, as the Vespa was frowned upon back in 1989. At 18, he bought his first ‘big’ 125cc Vespa, which he restored himself in the children's room of a fourth-floor apartment block due to lack of space. Inspired by numerous magazines, the madness really began. The versatility of the models slowly led to a small collection. As he didn't have much money, Thomas was never able to restore the next scooters, which turned out to be a stroke of luck. His collection now comprises around 40 Vespa and Lambretta scooters.
Through years of rummaging at various parts markets in Germany and abroad, he also accumulated many original spare parts, signs, toys and curiosities. The first thoughts of building his own museum came to Thomas' mind, but not immediately because the property prices in the area were hardly affordable.
Years passed and in 2024 the time had come! An old carpenter's workshop in the beautiful Salzkammergut is the perfect location for the long-standing dream of a Vespa museum. When asked why it is called ‘Josis’ Vespa Museum, he replied.... that comes from my father, who was called Josef and I was always Joe`s Bua, this name stuck with me and many friends and acquaintances know me as Joe or Josi.
In the museum itself there are not only numerous scooters from 1947-1985 but also many things to marvel at in detail. A small but fine Vespa museum that makes every Vespa lover's heart beat faster and is definitely worth a visit.
