Hofmühlersteg According to an expert, the Almsteg built in 1983 should actually be renewed. Because of a bearing that was badly affected by the weather, he did not consider renovation to be sensible. Innovative renovation instead of building from scratch a new building in steel or wood was considered.
But Franz Bammer from Holzbau Bammer in Scharnstein had a different idea: He suggested using a special technique to let the wooden girders merge directly into concrete at the particularly stressed point, and thus to permanently renovate the support - “a fairly new one in this form History, ”as Bammer relates. During the renovation of the Almtsteg, master carpenter Franz Bammer combined the advantages of wood and concrete - an innovative project that even aroused interest at the University of Stuttgart. So new that the experts at the materials testing institute at the University of Stuttgart also noticed him when he talked about his idea during a training course.
“It was found there that with wooden bridges, problems arise again and again in the same places - including with the support. You have therefore tried to develop a system how to avoid this problem from the outset in new buildings. And this system is very similar to mine, ”says Bammer. The University of Stuttgart then decided to provide scientific support for the project in the Almtal, which has the advantages of “perfect quality assurance”, according to the carpenter from Scharnstein. The renovation is to be completed in the summer and also includes a bridge roof: weather protection that should further increase the lifespan of the footbridge.
