I know from hearsay that there are events that completely change your life plans, but also your own life.
But suddenly - we, my husband and I, were totally overwhelmed by situations and the resulting changes in everyday life. We planned our time in retirement very differently. We suddenly couldn't realise many things, I couldn't understand many situations, many things happened for no reason. Sometimes I no longer understood the world - back then - 30 years ago.
The diagnosis brought clarity and understanding of the changes in our relationship. From then on, we were able to face this challenge together and I was no longer emotionally helpless and overwhelmed, at the mercy of the ever-increasing support and care. At a time when dementia/Alzheimer's was hardly known to anyone, let alone an issue. So I decided to meet up with other affected relatives and share our experiences. This is how the first self-help group for relatives of people with dementia was "born" in Bad Ischl in 1995
