The St. Wolfgang i. S. Citizens' Music Band was founded in the summer of 1861 under the patrons Georg Mayrhofer and Mayor Gottlieb Peter. At this time, the musical direction of the 14 members was in the hands of Anton Terschak. In 1876, Johann Höplinger, the son of a fisherman, took over the band and began his fifteen-year tenure as conductor of the St. Wolfgang i. S. Citizens' Band with a reorganisation of the young association and the recruitment and training of new citizen musicians. Ten years later, in 1886, the band was uniformed with a dark blue skirt with blue and white cords and a black hat with a white ostrich feather and, in bad weather, the officers' imperial and royal headgear.
In 1891, the St. Wolfgang i. S. Citizens' Music Band broke away from its dependence on the municipality and founded the "St. Wolfgang Citizens' Music Association" to maintain and financially secure the band. According to its statutes, the active members were still allowed to call themselves the "Bürgermusikkapelle". According to the chronicles of the Bürgermusikkapelle St. Wolfgang i. S., the band was active during the war years until 14 April 1942. However, as early as 7 June 1942, a 15-man band formed for a birthday serenade and resurrected the Bürgermusikkapelle during the war years. In May 1945, the brass band played for the Corpus Christi celebrations for the first time and from this point onwards, regular performances and rehearsals took place again.
Tradition and cross-generational work were then as now particularly important values for the Bürgermusikkapelle. The members of the Bürgermusikkapelle St. Wolfgang i. S. have therefore set themselves the task of carrying the history of the association into the future.
