Time and again, impressive views of the surrounding mountains and the region's characteristic landscapes open up. Many cycle paths are ideal for enjoyable cycling and relaxed day trips. Numerous bathing spots, viewpoints and traditional inns and cafés invite you to take a break along the way. Exercise in the great outdoors is combined with regional cuisine and a real zest for life. Thanks to modern e-bikes, even longer distances or gentle climbs can be mastered effortlessly and discovered in a relaxed manner - from lake to lake and from place to place. Cycling in the Salzkammergut combines nature, exercise and enjoyment and makes every ride a special experience.
There are cycle routes - and there are cycle tours that tell the story of an entire region. The Salzkammergut Cycle Trail undoubtedly belongs to the second category.
Covering around 300 kilometres, the route is a large circular tour through Upper Austria, Salzburg and Styria, connecting some of the most beautiful landscapes in Austria. Along the route are crystal-clear lakes, historic villages and striking mountain backdrops that have characterised the Salzkammergut for centuries. For generations, the region has thrived on the interplay of nature, culture and movement. Salt mining, imperial summer resorts and a long tradition of hospitality have created a cultural landscape here that can still be felt today. It is precisely this attitude to life that accompanies you on every stage. Or to put it simply: cycling in the Salzkammergut means enjoying life between mountains and lakes.
From lake to lake - 13 lakes in one cycle tour
The special character of the Salzkammergut Cycle Trail lies in its extraordinary lake landscape. The route connects a total of 13 of the largest lakes in the Salzkammergut and thus leads through one of the densest lake regions in Europe. From Lake Wolfgangsee to Lake Mondsee and Lake Attersee, Lake Traunsee and Lake Hallstättersee in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as Lake Fuschlsee, the lakes of Ausseerland and other small lakes, the water accompanies the cycle tour for many kilometres - always with the mountains of the Dachstein massif, the Höllengebirge or the Totes Gebirge in the background. This diversity makes the cycle route one of the most varied cycle tours in the Alps.
Cycle tour through history and cultural landscape
The Salzkammergut Cycle Route not only connects lakes and landscapes, but also places with great history. The route leads through the imperial town of Bad Ischl, once the summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph, past traditional towns such as St. Wolfgang or St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgangsee and on to the Mozart and festival city of Salzburg. Another highlight is the world-famous Hallstatt, whose history goes back over 7,000 years and which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Everywhere along the route, historic town centres, churches, squares and museums tell of a region that has been a meeting place for artists, travellers and connoisseurs for centuries.
Pleasure cycling to the rhythm of the landscape
The Salzkammergut Cycle Trail is deliberately designed as a leisure cycle route. The route mainly runs along well-maintained cycle paths and quiet side roads and is ideal for cycle tours lasting several days. Many guests discover the region in five to seven stages and take time to enjoy what makes the Salzkammergut so special: a cosy break for a swim by the lake, a cup of coffee on the lakeside terrace, freshly caught (lake) fish at the inn or a stroll through historic villages. Thanks to train and boat connections, the route can be flexibly planned, extended or shortened.
