The highlight is the ascent of the Mittagsloch cave

Date: 26.06.2026, 05:30 (P&R Mondsee) - 16:00 h

An impressive tour on the Untersberg, with the highlight of climbing through the Mittagsloch cave. The tour starts at the Rossboden hiking parking lot in Ettenberg/Marktschellenberg. The route follows well-maintained paths to the Scheibenkaser. This is where the alpine trail begins, which leads below the Untersberg walls (danger of falling rocks!) to the Mittagsloch cave. This is an approx. 100 m long cave that you can climb through. The exit is approx. 100 m below the Stöhrhaus (1894 m). On the summit plateau, we climb the last few meters to the Berchtesgadener Hochthron (1972 m). After a refreshment stop at the Stöhrhaus, we start the descent via the Gatterl Sattel. From there we return to the Scheibenkaser and continue to the starting point.

Ascent: approx. 3.5 h (Ettenberg - Scheibenkaser - Mittagsloch - Hochthron)
Descent: approx. 3 h (Hochthron - Gatterl - Scheibenkaser - Ettenberg)
Refreshments possible at the Stöhrhaus on the summit plateau.
Total ascent approx. 1300 m

Only in good and safe weather conditions!

Prerequisites: Good physical condition for a long, extensive day tour with 1300 hm, sure-footedness necessary. Don't be afraid of easy climbing sections where you have to use your hands and feet. AV membership

Equipment: Mountain equipment for a long one-day tour: sturdy mountain boots, helmet (danger of falling rocks!), sun and rain protection, food and drink (refreshments available at the Stöhrhaus on the summit plateau).
