Altaussee

Altaussee, Steiermark, Österreich

The magic of Altaussee is already evident in the name of the village. Everything here is steeped in tradition.

Altaussee has always enticed creative people – painters, writers, musicians – to stay and return. Anyone who follows their example would be well advised to do so.

The landscape envelops its visitors with limestone-white peaks, mountain forests and flower-filled meadows, or, as vast white expanses heavy with snow, lays a glistening blue lake at their feet – inviting them to swim in summer, steaming in the cold of winter or covered in glistening ice – at their feet, and constantly offering the eyes new vistas: for example, from the Seewiese across the water’s surface into the Salzkammergut, as far as the Dachstein Glacier, or from the Pflindsberg ruins over the village and the lake. The winter views – both deep and far-reaching – from the sunny ski mountain of Loser across the Ausseerland, past König Dachstein to the distant peaks of the Großvenediger, are particularly renowned.

Altaussee is a delight for the palate: a fresh char straight from the smokehouse is a real treat for food lovers. Altaussee also delights the other senses: traditional costume is part of everyday life here, and folk music even more so. The brine graduation facility soothes the respiratory tract with brine and fir twigs. Swimming, hiking, skiing, cross-country skiing, savouring life, celebrating, feeling at ease: that’s what Altaussee is all about.
