Lake Krottensee in Gmunden is a relic from the last ice age. The idyllically situated lake with its surrounding moorland forest, in the immediate vicinity of Cumberland Castle, is a so-called "dead ice hole".

Such collapses were caused by the retreat of the huge glaciers of the Ice Age. Today, Lake Krottensee is an exceptional urban recreational area. As a moorland lake, Lake Krottensee is embedded in moorland forests. The deciduous forest is home to an extraordinary variety of mushrooms in particular - more than 250 different species have been recorded in the moorland around Lake Krottensee. Carnivorous plants, such as the sundew, have also found an ideal habitat in the marshland of the small lake.
