"ThisImageIsEnchantinglyLovely..." The Plombergstein and his brothers. The Plombergstein, on which you are now standing , is the largest of the three princes, who set forth to look for the most beautiful place on earth. Only the one who finds this place may ask for the princess‘ hand. When the three brothers arrived from Salzburg and saw the Wolfgangsee for the first time, they froze in delight at the loveliness of the country and were converted into stone. Today they are called Plomberg-, Mitter- and Obenauerstein. The most famous is the Plombergstein, already mentioned in documents from 1571. Rockfalls have gouged out the so called “Steinklüfte”. These accessible ravines and caves served the people of St. Gilgen as a hiding place for their valuables during the Napoleonic wars in the early 19th century. At times marble was mined at the Plombergstein, and used for, among other thingd, the war memorial in St. Gilgen.
