The interesting and lively way in which this once so important craft is demonstrated is fascinating.
History dates back to the beginning of the 17th century. Already in 1604 a blacksmith called Jakob Grünauer is said to have produced axes there. The first reliable source (Wimsbach Parish Register) mentions the blacksmith´s shop in 1644. It is one of the oldest blacksmith´s shops of Austria. Sources prove that some of the blacksmiths of Wimsbach won fame, respect and economic wealth. In the second half of the 18th century recession forced many proprietors of the blacksmith shops to leave. The importance of the Wimbach brook is reflected by the fact that even in 1900 mot less than 10 mills were in operation along its shores. The Hackenschmiede blacksmith´s shop was in operation to 1970. With the advancement of industrialization it became unprofitable.
In 1968 the Bad Wimsbach-Neydharting cultural association bought the blacksmith´s shop and renovated it from 1975 to 1978. Last year a big blacksmith´s festival took place to celebrate the 400-year anniversary of the shop.
