The European emergency number 112 The telephone number 112 is the standard European emergency number and the first point of contact (Public Safety Answering Point - PSAP). Emergency calls are received here and the emergency information is forwarded to the appropriate rescue service, such as the police, fire brigade and ambulance. The PSAP either belongs to one of the named rescue organizations or serves as an interface between callers and rescue services. However, the organization of the emergency services remains a national or, as in Germany or Spain, a regional task. The emergency number 112 was set up in 1991 and gradually established in all EU countries. This number can be dialed free of charge anywhere in the European Union from a landline or mobile phone. In most countries, the number 112 supplements the existing national emergency numbers and does not replace them. The Europe-wide standardized emergency number 112 can be dialed from any telephone - with a mobile phone even without a network contract, without credit and usually even without a SIM card.
The police are on call day and night.
