Gravel biking: The new sports trend in the Salzkammergut

Gravel biking is the new trend in cycling and offers an exciting mix of road biking and mountain biking. Many bike manufacturers are increasingly selling lightweight hybrid bikes. These are ideal for tarmac and gravel paths. The best of both worlds, so to speak.

Instead of just riding on tarmac roads, you can also explore gravel paths and forest trails when gravel biking. This type of cycling not only offers sporting challenges, but also a unique experience of nature. Especially in the Salzkammergut, there are numerous opportunities for unforgettable gravel bike tours.

Why the Salzkammergut is perfect for gravel biking

Whether you prefer more gravel paths or more tarmac roads, the Salzkammergut offers the right route for every taste and every level. Enjoy the region's scenery as you cycle through dense forests, along clear lakes or up steep slopes.

A special gravel adventure in the Fuschlsee region is offered by the 69 km long route from Fuschl, which takes you past alpine meadows and offers a breathtaking mountain panorama. From Fuschl, the route continues to Hintersee via Faistenau, Koppl and Hof back to Fuschl.

Another highlight that will make every biker's heart beat faster is the gravel bike tour around Lake Wolfgangsee. The tour starts in St. Gilgen, leads over the Krottensee to the Eisenaueralm, on to the Schwarzensee, through Strobl and back to St. Gilgen.

For those looking for more of a challenge, the Postalm area offers a true biking paradise with the connection to Gosau. In Gosau, the Gosaukammblick circuit awaits you, which is marked as difficult with an elevation gain of 700 metres.

Through forest and meadow to the Kulmspitz in the Mondsee region. A forest road takes you up around 600 metres in altitude, from where you are rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view over the Alps and Lake Mondsee.

The cycle tour from Altmünster am Traunsee to Laudachsee also offers a few metres in altitude and a wonderful panorama. This tour starts in Altmünster via Gmunden and soon takes you up a steep climb on a gravel track. After the 7 hairpin bends, it is not far to a refreshing dip in the lake and a snack station.

The mixture of nature and well-maintained paths makes gravel biking in the Salzkammergut a special experience.

Do's and don'ts when gravel biking

To make your gravel bike tour in the Salzkammergut an unforgettable experience, there are a few things you should bear in mind.

1. Preparation
Check your bike before every tour. Tyres, brakes and chain should be in perfect condition. The bike specialists in the Salzkammergut can help you with this.

2. Equipment
Always wear a helmet and appropriate clothing. Weatherproof clothing and a small repair kit can also be useful.

3. Navigation
Use maps or GPS devices to find your way around the region. Many routes are well signposted, but it never hurts to be prepared.

4. Respect
Pay attention to other nature users. Hikers and other cyclists will be pleased if you ride considerately and follow the rules.

Don'ts:

1. Set off unprepared
Without good planning, a tour can quickly become unpleasant. Find out about the route and weather conditions beforehand.

2. Damage nature
Do not leave the designated paths and take your rubbish back with you. Protecting nature should always be your top priority.

3. Overestimate
Realistically assess your own abilities. Trails that are too difficult can be dangerous and spoil the fun.
