A gentle breeze brushes across your face. Far below, Lake Hallstatt sparkles in the sunlight. Colourful houses line the shore. You take in the vastness, squint into the sun, enjoy the warmth … and think about how, just a short while ago, you were exploring the tunnels deep inside the mountain. Racing down wooden miners’ slides and following in the footsteps of people who lived here thousands of years ago – at Salzwelten Hallstatt, the world’s oldest salt mine!

Before you can explore the tunnels of the salt mine, the Hallstatt Funicular takes you comfortably and barrier-free up the mountain. In just a few minutes, you travel 360 metres up to the Hallstatt High Valley. Did you know that people were already mining salt here 7,000 years ago? This makes Hallstatt the world’s oldest salt mine! Evidence of this fascinating past can still be found at the burial grounds in the Hallstatt High Valley. At several stops – including the walk-through burial chamber – you’ll discover fascinating facts about the prehistoric settlers and the world-famous place that gave an entire era its name.

Underground: Miners’ Slides, Bronze Age Cinema & More

After a short walk through the Hallstatt High Valley, Salzwelten Hallstatt welcomes you with a traditional “Glück Auf!”. Your exciting journey into the heart of the mountain begins at the Knappenhaus. First, you enter the mountain on foot, where a Salzwelten guide leads you through the underground tunnels. Race down the miners’ slides and discover fascinating stories and facts about salt mining.

And the world’s oldest salt mine holds yet another record: Europe’s oldest wooden staircase was discovered in Hallstatt’s prehistoric tunnels – built 2,800 years ago! Today, the staircase is the star of the “Bronze Age Cinema”, 400 metres underground – probably the deepest cinema in the world. A thrilling ride on the mine train then takes you back to daylight.

After exploring the depths of the mountain, another highlight awaits you – quite literally: the Hallstatt Skywalk! A twelve-metre-long viewing platform that extends out over the mountainside. Do you dare to step right to the very edge? If you do, you’ll be rewarded with an unforgettable view and an adrenaline rush as you look out over world-famous Lake Hallstatt, the UNESCO World Heritage village of Hallstatt, and the surrounding mountain landscape.
