Location: 589 m above sea level
Size: approx. 2 km long, 700 m wide
Depth: up to 9 m
Temperature: Thanks to the ice-cold inflow from the Aagbach stream, the lake remains pleasantly cool even in summer (approx. 18°C).

Activities around Lake Almsee

A 6-km circular hiking trail takes you through the idyllic landscape. Along the way, benches and the “Schöne Aussicht” (Beautiful View) area—with its cozy hanging chairs—invite you to enjoy the reflections on the water.

Please note that activities such as camping, diving, surfing, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, and the use of electric motorboats as well as non-local flotation devices are not permitted.
This helps preserve nature in its original state!

Winter Magic at Almsee

Almsee is a wonderful experience even in winter. The access road is plowed, but there are no groomed winter hiking trails. Use of the trails and ice surfaces is at your own risk.

Important Information

Parking: Two designated parking lots are available. The daily fee is €5. Illegal parking will be strictly penalized.
Nature Conservation: Please respect the rules of the protected area to preserve the unique landscape.

Here's how to get to Almsee in Grünau im Almtal in the Salzkammergut:

We recommend traveling by public transportation!
By train: Take the Almtalbahn (Line 153) from the Wels train station to Grünau im Almtal;
There are numerous connections at Wels Station to mainline trains on the Westbahn line (Line 101) heading toward Linz/Vienna or Salzburg/Munich, as well as to Passau/Nuremberg.

From the Grünau train station, there are connections via the OÖVV bus or the Salzkammergut Shuttle Service to Almsee. Of course, you can also enjoy a leisurely walk along the Almuferweg trail by the Alm River.

From the Grünau train station to the Almsee GH Seehaus stop: Call the taxi dispatch center at least 1 hour in advance at 050-422 422 or book online at www.salzkammergutshuttle.at.

By bike:
Follow the R11 Almtal Bike Trail from Wels into the Almtal valley to Almsee
Tip: Part of the bike path runs along the Almsee state road—in between, you can also take the MTB trail for a few kilometers, which starts just before the wildlife park and leads to the Almbrücke bridge in front of the Jagersimmerl/Heztau.

On foot: From the town center or the Grünau im Almtal train station, you can take a leisurely hike along the Almuferweg“Genuss am Almfluss” trail via the Cumberland Wildlife Park to Almsee!

By car:
A1 West Highway: Vienna – Voralpenkreuz-A9 – Ried/Tr. exit – Voitsdorf – Pettenbach – take the B120 to Scharnstein – take the Almseelandesstraße to Grünau im Almtal
