Calvary Church Hallstatt

Hallstatt, Oberösterreich, Österreich

At the end of Hallstatt, above the main road, lies an extremely beautiful baroque building. We are talking about the romantic church on the mountain - also better known as the Calvary Church.

Baroque art in Hallstatt

Around 24,000 curved larch shingles were needed to save the Calvary Church in the World Heritage town of Hallstatt from decay. The curved roof shape was restored to its original form a few years ago. The church dates back to 1711 and, together with the Stations of the Cross chapels , was donated by a childless court clerk couple who also wanted to have their final resting place there.

Ideal starting point for a tour of Hallstatt

As the Calvary Church is located in the immediate vicinity of the public parking lot P1, it is an ideal starting point for a tour of Hallstatt.
From the top, you have a wonderful view of the historic lakeside town and the fjord-like Lake Hallstatt before you set off on a leisurely discovery tour of the World Heritage Site.
