Across the Steinfeldstraße-Rettenbachwaldstraße you arrive the Rettenbachwildnis. Via Steinfeldstraße-Rettenbachwaldstraße you reach the Rettenbach wilderness.
North of a large meadow, the path leads into the forest. After about 200 metres, a path leads down to the gorge. You can already hear the rushing and roaring of the Rettenbach, especially wild at high water. There are marvellous photo opportunities here. Timber used to be transported through this narrow gorge. The streams would often dam up and many lumberjacks lost their lives here. The water for drifting was dammed above the Rettenbachalm.
A narrow path leads up to the forest road. A quarter of an hour's walk out of the valley takes you to the former Rettenbachmühle inn.

Beautiful circular hike, which can also be extended in the direction of the Rettenbachalm. Continue across the extensive alpine pasture area to the Rettenbachklamm gorge and Blaa-Alm.

Hiking options:
Rettenbachklamm gorge circular trail - Hubhanslau karst spring
Hiking trail Rettenbachalm - Blaa Alm - Altaussee

At the starting point: About 100 metres below the bridge over the Rettenbach, a memorial plaque is attached to a rock on the right bank of the stream, which commemorates an ancestor of the Russian astronaut Gagarin: Prince Leon Gagarin and his son Vladimir, who drowned at this spot on 3 August 1868. It is assumed that the two of them were bathing when the sluices were opened in the Rettenbachalm for wood drifting.
