About the Dörrhüttln
The Dörrhüttle-pass from Rudolf Aumüller focuses on the old tradition of fruit preservation, in particular within the Salzkammergut.
This old tradition of drying fruit in the Inner Salzkammergut was vital to survival in the past and has become part of the local culture today. The love of these old Dörr huts was rediscovered by Rudi Aumüller when his neighbours suddenly began building a Dörr hut in the old style. A short while later the neighbours offered him some self-dried fruit. Rudi realised what delicious treats could be prepared in the Dörr huts and learned what these huts in people's gardens were used for.
this old tradition in the Salzkammergut is still alive today and upon closer inspection of the towns around the region you can see it in action all year round.
During different hikes around Bad Goisern, new Dörr huts can be discovered and photographed. The owners have always been excited to talk about the culturally significant buildings in their gardens and because of this, Rudi got to know not only the owners but also the builders and the year in which the huts were built. Lots of details about drying in the Salzkammergut was provided by the owners.
Not only information on the types of fruit that were dried was provided, but also on how the fruit was prepared beforehand. Over time, a lot of information on the entire tradition was collected from around the Salzkammergut.
At the suggestion of one of the Dörr hut owners, Rudi decided to put all the collected information into a brochure. This was published in Autumn of 2009.
