The **Ranftlmühle** is located in the district of **Gößl** in the municipality of **Grundlsee** in **Styria**. Built in 1850 from wood, it is picturesquely situated by the Stimitzbach, a steeply descending mountain stream, whose name has Slavic origins. The mill is named after the Viennese painter **Johann Matthias Ranftl** (1805–1854), who enjoyed spending time at **Grundlsee** and used the **mill** as a source of inspiration. After decades of decay, the **Ranftlmühle** was extensively restored between 2006 and 2011. Among other things, the mill post, the water wheel, and the roof were renewed. The renovation work was mostly done by hand, as the narrow access road did not allow the use of heavy machinery. Today, the mill presents itself again in its original condition and is a testament to the traditional craftsmanship of the region. The **Ranftlmühle** is reachable via a short walk from **Gößl** and is located on the way to the **[Toplitzsee](https://www.ausseerland.at/en/toplitzsee)**, a popular excursion destination in the **Ausseerland**.
