Pflindsberg is the **castle** of the evil bishop **Philipp von Spanheim** (1220-1279), he was a flamboyant personality. Although chosen as Archbishop of Salzburg, he persistently refused to receive the spiritual dignities. In the year 1246, he occupied the Ausseer region by force of arms. In 1395, the castle was the seat of the guardianship, later a **prison** for "malefactors," which included, for example, murderers. According to legend, the soul of an innocent prisoner who died in the tower is said to still haunt the **castle meadow** as a **black rider**. The complex fell into disrepair around 1780. Next to the remaining castle walls, a **viewing tower** was built in 2000, overlooking **[Altaussee](https://www.steiermark.com/de/steiermark/staedte-orte/altaussee_c1016)**, Bad Aussee, and the surrounding **[mountain world](https://www.steiermark.com/de/Ausseerland-Salzkammergut/Urlaub-planen/Ausflugsziele/Loser-Panoramabahn-Altaussee_isd_54341689)**.
