Do not miss out on visiting Upper Austria’s most famous carnival, the so-called “Ebensee national holidays”, and experience it live.
The “National holidays” begin on Carnival Saturday. That’s when the colourful and joyous children’s carnival parade is taking place. Hundreds of children are walking through town, charming the visitors with imaginative and funny costumes.
On the next day, Carnival Sunday, at 2 p.m., the adult jesters are roaming through town instead of the children and target local events, politics or different characters during the Ebensee Carnival Parade with their performances.
The most exceptional event and a highlight for the Ebensee locals, however, is the Fetzenzug parade on Fetzenmontag (Carnival Monday). The jesters are wearing “Fetzen” (frazzles) and “geschnegerte” (artistically carved) wooden masks (called Larven). In order to be unrecognisable, they even change their voices and can thus tell the unvarnished truth disguised and bold, and criticise everything that has affected or irritated them throughout the year. The Fetzenzug is leaving Langbathstraße at 3 p.m. and is headed to the main road and the town hall where the parade scatters. The Fetzen event is then continued in restaurants and the streets until the morning hours of Tuesday. So bring along enough endurance and merriment and experience a carnival you will not forget any time soon.
On Carnival Tuesday, it’s the children’s turn to celebrate again; during “Nuß-Nuß” at 3 p.m., nuts, oranges, sweet etc. are thrown into the crowd of children. All the children have to do is yell the rhyme of the Ebensee Fetzenzug as loud as possible.
The burning of the carnival on the banks of the Traun river marks the finale of Ebensee’s carnival on Ash Wednesday at 3 p.m. with “Brieftaschlwaschen” (washing the wallet symbolising that no money is left over after carnival) and the Heringschmaus (herring feast) at the restaurants.
