Like two shimmering pearls, the two Salzkammergut lakes Mondsee and Irrsee lie in the middle of a green landscape of snug valleys and rugged mountain peaks. While at Lake Irrsee and on the north side of Lake Mondsee the hilly landscape gently slopes down to the shore and invites you to enjoy leisurely walks, in the south the peaks of the northern Limestone Alps rise to a spectacular mountain scenery.
Tip: No matter from which direction you come to our region, you will immediately discover our new look out tower on the Kulmspitz from every direction.
...a hike or an (e-)mountain bike tour to our new lookout tower on the Kulmspitz? The approximately one-hour hike on easy terrain rewards you with a magnificent panoramic view of the majestic mountains and glittering lakes of the Salzkammergut. Looking south to the glistening waters of Lake Mondsee and the rugged peaks of Drachenwand, Schober and Schafberg, the Höllengebirge mountain rises above the scenery in the east and on clear days you can even see the Traunstein.
The look out tower is also easy to reach by (e-)mountain bike and can be combined with a nice round tour on the Mondseeberg, for example.
After a varied day on the e-bike or on foot, many culinary discoveries await our guests - be it the game weeks, wild herb adventure days or the Italian days at the Hotel Restaurant Krone.
What would a hiking tour be without a culinary halt in between? In September and October the hosts invite you to enjoy the culinary delights of the Wolfgangsee region and spoil hikers and gourmets with autumnal treats.
It is this very special light that makes the autumn days shimmer golden. The forests slowly change their colours, dragonflies dance against the light and the turquoise green depths of Lake Wolfgangsee remind us of the last hot days. In no other season of the year is the visibility so clear and the longing so strong: summer is over and the days are getting shorter. Now is the time to enjoy every single sunny day to the fullest and the time to sit on a Gschmå-Platzl (Austrian for a “really nice place”) and look into the blue: on the glittering lake or into the wide sky. It is autumn at Lake Wolfgangsee and therefore time for the ultimate enjoyment.
...and be all by yourself. Take a timeout instead of just a break. Be connected with the nature for once. At Lake Wolfgangsee you can find fantastic hiking and biking trails, the best culinary delights and lots of vacation happiness. Summer retreat reloaded – as they say nowadays.
When in autumn the leaves turn into brightly coloured foliage, and when the emerald-green Wolfgangsee becomes the mirror of a dreamlike landscape - then autumn moves across the country. And that is actually the most beautiful season for hiking, Nordic walking, exploring alpine pastures, or simply discovering the restaurants and inns around Lake Wolfgangsee.
The region surrounding Lake Wolfgangsee is considered the “Gateway to the Salzkammergut” and is a hiking paradise par excellence. Among the most famous hiking spots are the striking Schafberg Mountain near St. Wolfgang and the Zwölferhorn in St. Gilgen with its many alpine huts: the Schafbergbahn and the Zwölferhornbahn make ascents and/or descents very easy.
While at the end of September the cows, sheep and goats are often driven down from the mountain pastures, the huts around Lake Wolfgang are still open. Everything that the autumn brings is prepared until the wood stoves are smouldering. Now game dishes, smoked fish, dumpling variations, mushroom sausages and desserts with berries and fruit from the garden such as strudel and Pofesen are on the menus.
Not all of us were able to turn our passion into a profession. In many cases the “job” is merely a more or less annoying matter of duty. Not however for Walter Ladner. After 37 years in the baking business he followed his passion in 2012 and started his own business as an artisan and wood artist.
A step that required a lot of courage but which he has not regretted for a single minute to this day. The former bank employee born in 1957 inherited his love for natural material and wood from his grandfather. Just as much as his artistic talent which, by the way, was already in his cradle.
Around Lake Wolfgangsee numerous handicraft businesses are located and during a visit our guests can take a look behind the scenes.
Bookable for groups of 10 persons or more.

Autumn with its delights in the Attersee-Attergau region is the time to try something new.
Regional game specialties from our local hunt or from the hunter next door are on the menus. The homemade roast venison, directly from the local forests at Lichtenberg or other specialities from fresh game invite you to special moments of culinary delights.

Behind it there are not only 4 different tastes but above all 4 regional breweries and brewers who do their craft with a lot of energy: The Pfahlbaubier, the Bierschmiede Werkstück, the Bräu am Berg Berggold and the Gugg beer. Look forward to 4 different taste experiences from the Attersee-Attergau region united as a 4-piece carrier. Under the title "Atterherbst" the tourism association Attersee-Attergau is looking for the most beautiful autumn photo from the region. The cosy hills of the Attergau and the challenging peaks of the Höllengebirge Mountains allow a wide variety of views of the region. Whether with or without Lake Attersee, whether on the summit or relaxing on your favorite bench, the most beautiful autumn pictures in the Attersee-Attergau region are in demand.
The winning photo will be the new main motif of the autumn campaign and vouchers worth 150€ are waiting for the winner. Second to fourth place will also be awarded with vouchers, including value vouchers from Kulinarium Attersee, Taste the Lake, Attergauer Marktgutscheine or shopping vouchers from the communities of Vöcklamarkt, Frankenmarkt and Unterach.
The Traunsee-Almtal region is a true energy filling station for the new "conscious life generation". Even if the current situation demands a lot from us, we are already looking forward to the hiking experiences with the new Traunsee-Almtal hiking pass – bei uns Dahoam!
In memory of the former mayor of Grünau im Almtal, Alois Weidinger, who died in a fatal accident in 2018 there will be a “Delights at the Alm river” hiking day on the Austrian national holiday. The hike takes you along the "Delights at the Alm river" trail from Pettenbach via Viechtwang and Scharnstein to the alpinist village Grünau im Almtal.
Duration of the hike is about 3 hours, length about 12 km and hardly any difference in altitude in the beautiful mountain and forest landscape of the Almtal with unique views to overcome.
The beauty of the region and the traditional minds are also reflected in the culinary delights. "Haftig" (wild, impressive) suits the area as well as the people. "G'schmackig" (tasty) are those dishes that have made guests of the Ausseerland become friends for centuries.
The epitome of Ausseer cuisine is first and foremost regional fish dishes. The char and trout combine central elements of tradition and modern culinary art like no other dish.
Due to their delicate taste, both char and trout are often eaten fried, smoked, pickled or even raw, and have become a favourite. Anyway, there are no limits to creativity, as restaurateurs of the Ausseerland region have proven time and time again. Fresh char and trout from the Ausseerland fishery are used for the preparation.
Both local fish species make high demands on their habitat and are therefore rarely found as a duo elsewhere. The Ausseerland as their natural environment makes them robust and vital - no wonder when living in lakes with drinking water quality. Char and trout, main protagonists of regional cuisines, have always been typical inhabitants of Aussee. They come directly from the lakes as wild catch or are reared. Slowly in ice-cold spring water - without any hurry. But in incomparable quality.
Following in the footsteps of James Bond, you will discover the picturesque Lake Altaussee and the enchanting landscape surrounding it with the solar boat. At Grundlsee, the "Styrian Sea", you can enjoy the Ausseerland with the liner ships MS Rudolf and MS Traun - pure Salzkammergut. Even in autumn you can experience the region by ship on the two lakes - an Ausseerland must-do. The restaurants at the Lakes Altaussee and Grundlsee offer classic and modern specialties and invite you to a relaxed halt. Full of energy, the autumn vacation can then move on to the next round. Those who prefer a small-scale boat tour can book a trip on both lakes with the traditional „Plätten”.
Tip: a Plätten-breakfast also makes this trip a special culinary experience.
...to the mountains with the most beautiful views of the Salzkammergut with the unique treetop cable car.
Follow in the footsteps of the emperor in Bad Ischl and enter a nature-protected hiking paradise. Starting point for the magical 7 Lakes View Hike (1.5 to 2 hours) over 2 or 3 peaks (Katrin, Elferkogel and Hainzen), the Feuerkögerl- and Rosenkögerl-Rundweg or the walks to the viewing platforms "Trauntalblick" or "3-Länder-Blick". The Katrin via ferrata is a great option for action seekers. Let yourself get pampered in the alpine hut or mountain inn or on one of their sun terraces. The spa town Bad Ischl as the heart of the Salzkammergut with its local mountain the Katrin was already considered a place of relaxation in the days of the emperor.
While the city with its cultural diversity and the historical buildings and places leaves nothing to be desired the Katrin invites you to a unique nature experience. The impressive mountain scenery and the almost endless expanses have always amazed people.
Start and finish in Bad Ischl - with magnificent views of the Dachstein and the imperial town. A total of 655 meters of altitude difference have to be mastered, whereby a quarry, the Saiherbachalm and the Schneeröselkogel are the cornerstones of the tour. Cycle paths, forest roads, meadow paths and trail routes mark the route.
Half an hour's walk from Bad Ischl, after the former Rettenbachmühle inn is the Rettenbachwildnis.
The Rettenbachwildnis can be reached via the Steinfeldstraße-Rettenbachwaldstraße. North of a large meadow the path leads into the forest. After about 200 m a path leads down to the gorge. Long before reaching it you can hear the rushing and roaring of the Rettenbach – especially wild at high water. Here you can take beautiful pictures.
In the past, wood was driven through this narrow rocky gorge. Often the logs were dammed up and numerous lumberjacks lost their lives here. The water for floating was dammed above the Rettenbachalm. A narrow path leads up to the forest road. From the valley you can reach the former Rettenbachmühle inn in about 45 minutes.
Beautiful circular hiking trail, which can also be extended in the direction of Rettenbachalm. Further hiking over the extensive alpine pasture area to the Rettenbachklamm and Blaa-Alm is possible.
