Bauernherbst in the Salzkammergut

Customs and traditions

When the farmers have completed their summer work and mowed the fields one last time, harvesting fruits and vegetables from the gardens, then it becomes calm again and the autumn comes. The farmers process the fresh selection into culinary delicacies and decorate the cows for the Almabtrieb.

It is the time of homecoming, festivities and encounters. Locals and guests meet and celebrate the finale of the summer together. Young and old exchange memories, tell of traditions, peasant or weather rules and the best recipes from the farmers kitchen. In addition, lighthearted songs are sung, people sing and play, dance and dance.

The Fuschlsee with its farmer villages Fuschl am See, Hof bei Salzburg, Faistenau and Thalgau forms the perfect scenery for the Salzburger Bauernherbst: 40 alpine farmers along the 150 kilometers of hiking trails invite you to a culinary stop, beautiful cycle routes and the lake itself ensure an unforgettable nature and enjoyment experience. A shore walk along with Zillenschifffahrt and a smoked trout in the lock fishery is among the most beautiful, what the autumn in the Salzkammergut has to offer.

In the style of the k.u.k tradition, the imperial city of Bad Ischl welcomes its guests: in the autumn, there are alpine festivals, farmers' markets and the traditional Almabtrieb. Trippers in Bad Ischl enjoy a magnificent view over the mountains and lakes to the Dachstein Glacier.
