The unique Benedictine monastery church dating back to the 12th century was rebuilt in Gothic style from 1470 – 1487 and is one of the biggest Gothic churches of Austria. It features magnificent Baroque interior decorations.
This church was the venue for the shooting of the wedding scene of the American musical “Sound of Music”.
St. Michael’s parish church has been internationally known for many decades and a great number of visitors especially from overseas visit it annually.
748 A.D. the Bavarian duke Odilo founded the monastery in Mondsee. It is the province’s oldest monastery and an important site of early Christianity in Upper Austria. The first monks came from Monte Casino.
The “Mondsee Matthäus”, the oldest German bible translation, was made in Mondsee. The exceptionally beautiful Baroque interiors were made in the late 17th and early 18th century. The Baroque sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler lived in Mondsee for 44 years and the Mondsee church holds many treasures made by him.

Visitors of Mondsee have the opportunity to follow three cultural trails and dive into the past of Mondsee for two, five or eight hours. It is best to cross the market square to the church, get a glimpse of the many baroque art pieces inside the church and then explore the Local Heritage Museum or the Mondsee Smokehouse Open Air Museum. The dock area is one of the most impressive shorelines of Austria. Excursion cruisers and boat cruisers can be enjoyed. One can also watch the hustle and bustle on the lake from a lakeside bench or a beer garden. Important artists like August Strindberg or Carl Carl Michael Ziehrer also discovered the MondSeeLand area and have been influenced by their stays there.
