The Mondsee Local Heritage Museum next to the church is mainly dedicated to the interesting history of the Mondsee monastery and the many artists that were active there.
This house also holds the Austrian Museum of Lake Dwellings and shows the first lake dwellings in the shore area of Lake Mondsee. It depicts the so-called “Mondsee culture”.
The first settlers arrived 5000 years ago and their way of life at the shore of Lake Mondsee is presented. Numerous findings tell of the Roman settlement. 748 A.D. the Bavarian duke Odilo II founded the Benedictine monastery at Lake Mondsee.
Many impressive pieces of art emerged during the several centuries of monastery culture, e.g. the Tassilo Psalter, the oldest, completely preserved book that was written in Austria. After 800 the Mondsee Matthäus emerged, the oldest German translation of the Bible.
