The Narcissus:
The beautiful Narcissus flower that grows in abundance in lovely Ausseerland Area is commonly called "POET'S NARCISSUS" (also known as White Daffodil, "narcissicus poeticus"). This species is native to Southern Europe and can be found cultivated throughout Central Europe. In Austria it grows in Upper Styria, in Salzkammergut, and in Lower Austria. From mid-May through late June, the lovely narcissus is in full bloom. Its abundance in the springtime and delicate fragrance so favored by both locals and visitors came to epitomize purity of heart and soul. The Ausseerland Area boasts vast fields and slopes with thousands of narcissus, their fragrance wafting far and wide…
The Origins:
The colorful pageantry that has come to symbolize the annual Narcissus Festival had its beginnings in the year 1960 as a simple Spring Festival. Since then, it has been held each year on the last weekend in May and has drawn thousands of visitors to Ausseerland.
The upcoming 51th Daffodil Festival takes place
from Thursday, May 28 – Sunday, May 30, 2010. The highlight
of the festival, the car and boat parade, takes place on May 30
(car parade in Bad Aussee, boat parade on Altauseer See Lake).
