Dachstein World Heritage Family Adventure
DACHSTEIN WORLD HERITAGE amidst the Salzkammergut area in Obertraun at Hallstättersee Lake captivates with unspoilt nature, fantastic caves and a varied program for families.
The several thousand-year-old karst formations of the Dachstein massif, the varied fauna and flora and last but not least the many family-friendly hiking trails, spectacular vantage points and a great family park make this region so attractive to visitors.
With the new cable railway already the journey to the top of the mountain is a pleasure. Modern infotainment walls, great panorama gondolas and barrier-free access ensure that families can enjoy a carefree nature experience with a difference.
The following highlights ensure that children and their parents won’t get bored:
- Breath-in mountain air:
If you’ve always wanted to see the world from the perspective of a cave explorer, then the DACHSTEIN caves are the place to go. Three different show caves invite to explore the underground world. The gigantic ice cave captivates with its bizarre ice formations, the mammoth cave with its km-long alleys that have been formed by primeval rivers and “Koppenbrüller” cave with its roaring water that still today forces its way through the rocks.
- Come on and join the adventure:
If a “regular” guided tour of the caves is not adventurous enough for you, you can join special guided tours off the beaten tracks. The “short adventure tour” of Koppenbrüller cave is the ultimate tour for the youngest guests. Equipped with helmet, head lights and overall they access the eroded underground world with an experienced guide and conquer narrow and easy climbing passages. Older children and youths love the trekking tour into the primeval water caves of Koppenbrüller cave. This route offers everything from narrow passages to climbing passages.
- Pure adrenaline:
Hikers that want to conquer the summit of Krippenstein Mountain can visit two exceptional observation platforms in immediate proximity to the lift top terminal. The World NATURE Heritage View is a fantastic panoramic view of the Dachstein plateau and its numerous summits, and from the steel platform of the 5-fingers observation point, one of the most spectacular observation platforms of the Alps, you can enjoy a World CULTURAL Heritage View. The construction in the shape of five fingers is located above a 400m deep precipice and offers another surprising moment on each of the five footbridges.
- Hike through the History of Earth:
With its individually-designed theme trails the Dachstein massif is a paradise for families. The Heilbronn loop trail e.g. shows with different examples and information panels how the area of the Dachstein has changed over the course of millions of years.
The family hiking trail from the Krippenstein top terminal past Margschierf to Heilbronn cross and from there to Gjadalm base station can even be walked on with cross-country prams (they can be rented at the DACHSTEIN world heritage).
- Schönbergalm Family Park:
Within the scope of the Upper Austrian Federal Exhibition 2008 a family park with a difference has been installed in the area of Schönbergalm pasture. All stations invite to understand, play and test. The “Almboden” kick invites to an exceptional football experience, the Mutmam cave – a long, worm-shaped tunnel made of larch wood – gives a foretaste to the alleyways of the caves and the “Sauwetter”-station shows a film that introduces to world of bats. Mythical stories on the “Wilde Gjaid” have been chiselled into stone, children from the region have drawn the life of the cave bear and an adventure trail with ladders and climbing sections make already the ascent to the gigantic ice cave an experience with a difference. While children are introduced to research, geology, fauna and flora of DACHSTEIN World Heritage in a playful way, parents can relax in the Schönbergalm restaurant.
Regional culinary delights, different freshly prepared specialties and a friendly team ensure that the excursion to the mountain is a highlight for everyone. And of course family-friendly programs ensure that the young and old get their money’s worth.
