Game Park Workshop

Children as natural scientists: “I don’t have to learn this, because I’ve experienced it!”

Inquisitiveness and scientific curiosity come natural to children. They love to examine things, take them apart and ask for the “How?” and “Why?”. Learning to live is always about pursuing basic science. The theme of the following activities is: “Only if I know about something I can appreciate and protect it”.

1 Guided Tours of the Game Park
Possibilities:
Small Northern Loop: from Wildpark-Stüberl restaurant to the northern gate, back to the trout feeding or Herzogenstand.
Small Southern Loop: from Wildpark-Stüberl restaurant straight to the trout feeding, continue to Kasbachteich pond, past the owls and wild boars and back.
Big Southern Loop: from Wildpark Stüberl restaurant left to Herzogstand, down to Kasbachteich pond, past the griffon vultures; up to the moufflon enclosure, past the pheasants, owls and wild boars and back.
Duration: approx. 2 hours
Contents: Information on Cumberland Game Park;
Tasks of zoos and game parks today; brief summary of the biology of the different animals; research on raven and northern bald ibis at the Konrad Lorenz research centre; mythological stories (e.g. raven); information on the origin of names (especially the names of birds); comparing of tracks (e.g. comparing tracks of a wild cat, an otter or marten; food rests of squirrels of mice?).
Especially for children: different games to explore the world of forests and fields (e.g. “faulty nature” – along the trail a wrong fruit, buds or leaves: along the shores of ponds we search for water animals and check the quality of the water.

2 Wilderness Experience: on the lookout for hidden signs of life
Tracks: Do tracks belong to a badger or fox? Food rests: Are these cones leftovers of a breakfast of a squirrel or of a mouse? Not only birds and mammals leave their tracks, but also many insects.
Duration: approx. 2 hours / max. 12- 14 children / EUR 30 / Parents can also participate.

3 Game Park Workshop: Live under a Magnifying Glass
Do larva of the meal beetle prefer bright or dark subsoil? How do roots and young shoots find their way when sprouting? Animals and plants can in fact show us where they feel at home. With the help of simple experiments one can study interesting behaviour and make other biological observations.
Duration: approx. 2 hours / EUR 30

4 Game Park Workshop: Science for Children
Why are drops of water always round? Why are tops of church spires often green? How can we test if food is sour without tasting it? The best-possible answers can be found with simple and safe experiments. Such interesting experiments are possible in all scientific areas (chemistry, biology, and physics). Walk through the world with your eyes open, ask questions, look for answers, make experiments – that’s what every scientist does!
Duration: approx. 2 hours / EUR 30

Additional Information:
On request guided tours are also offered in English or Italian. The guided tours can also be altered on request. Please book at the Grünau im Almpast tourist information office.
