51th Narcissus Festival

Splendid narcissus flowers as far as they eye can see… Every year, spring is welcomed with the Narcissus Festival, the biggest flower parade in Austria. Highlights are the popular car and float parade at Bad Aussee and on Altausseer See Lake, next year scheduled on May 25th, 2008.

The Facts

51. Narzissenfest
May 28th, 2010 - May 30th, 2010
Location: Ausseerland (Altaussee, Bad Aussee, Grundlsee.)

The Narcissus:
The beautiful Narcissus flower that grows in abundance in lovely Ausseerland Area is commonly called "POET'S NARCISSUS" (also known as White Daffodil, "narcissicus poeticus"). This species is native to Southern Europe and can be found cultivated throughout Central Europe. In Austria it grows in Upper Styria, in Salzkammergut, and in Lower Austria. From mid-May through late June, the lovely narcissus is in full bloom. Its abundance in the springtime and delicate fragrance so favored by both locals and visitors came to epitomize purity of heart and soul. The Ausseerland Area boasts vast fields and slopes with thousands of narcissus, their fragrance wafting far and wide…

The Origins:
The colorful pageantry that has come to symbolize the annual Narcissus Festival had its beginnings in the year 1960 as a simple Spring Festival. Since then, it has been held each year on the last weekend in May and has drawn thousands of visitors to Ausseerland. The Narcissus Festival is now in its 51th year, held May 28th to 30th, 2010. Highlight is the popular car and float parade on Altausseer See Lake, this year scheduled on June 3: Numerous floats are decorated with thousands of beautiful narcissus flowers.
