We start this tour in Altaussee, (although we could also join the route from Bad Goisern or St. Agatha), where we turn left in the town center after baking Maislinger and ride uphill on the asphalt road along the stream – Augstbach, in the direction of the alpine hut - Blaa Alm and the salt mine.

After about 2 km we pass the turn-off on the left to the salt mine. We stay on the road bike and uphill to to free ski / Altaussee, where the restaurant village shop is open in summer. From here it is a wide gravel road uphill to the Blaa Alm (894m), an idyllically located and extremely welcoming alpine pasture inn surrounded by a little alpine pasture village. Here one can enjoy the unique combination of the comfort an On-Mountain Inn and Four Star Hotel.

From the Blaa Alm a forest road leads to the state border with Upper Austria. It leads left and downhill along a small stream and then into the valley of Rettenbach, which we follow for a long stretch, it is a beautiful descent.
Attention: the beginning of the descent is extremely steep; all non-practiced mountain bikers should get off for a few meters.

Passing the mountain hut inn Rettenbach Alm (possibility to make a stop) we now come to gentle sloping descents in the direction of Bad Ischl and the turn-off to the Grabenbach forest road. Here we keep left and enjoy a delightful landscape along with a reasonably steep ascent to Grabenbach Klause. We now stay right until the turn-off to ‘Am Tauern’, where we turn left (right leads to Hoisnradalm, Reinfalzalm and to Bad Ischl).

We continue to the end of the forest road, where an approx. 350 m long stretch begins where we get off and push our bikes along a mainly damp track with red Alpine association markings. We reach the highest point of the route by passing along pasture ground and a narrow path through a field; the mountain hut inn Hütteneckalm at 1.240 m. Here a break is recommended to enjoy a homemade dish or ’Schüsselkäs’ - the house specialty. There is a magnificent view of the Dachstein Massif.

It is now downhill on the forest track in the direction of St. Agatha, the first stretch is again very steep. In the area of Pichlern we turn left at the turn-off for the Halleralm (easy to miss the turning as it is only signposted uphill), after 300 m we pass the hikers guesthouse Halleralm and follow the forest road uphill to its end. On the way we pass by the excavation area of a Roman settlement.

At the end of the forest road we take the footpath downhill (Attention: not signposted, only Alpine Association markings) and push the bikes 250 m to the forest track left in the direction of Waldgraben. We then come to the ‘Scheibenstraße’ crossroads, and follow the sign ‘Pflindsbergstraße’ to ‘Gschloßfeld’. Here, near a wayside shrine with a crucifix, a 5 minute walk on the footpath leads out to the Pflindsberg ruins. we ride from ’Gschloßfeld’ on the gravel track downhill to ‘Rambühel’ and from there on asphalt back to Altaussee.
