Diving in Traunsee

Located in the wildly romantic setting of Traunstein-
Erlakogel-Sonnsteinmassiv, the Traunsee, being the deepest of the Salzkammergut lakes, is a true haven for the practiced diver. Whether it be the fascinating steep rock faces of the south and east banks or the flat terraces deposited with sediment in the northern part of the lake – partly even deposited with fresh water fungi – it is quite simply a fascinating stretch of water, which however, due to the very predominant steep falling walls, can only be recommended to practiced and safe divers.

The Facts

Entering point: MADONNA:
(western shore, approx. 1.5km south of the village of Traunkirchen)
After Traunkirchen, just between the first two Sonnenstein tunnels is a Madonna statue on a pedestal. There one can dive along a steep face until one gets to a plateau at a depth of 20 metres. Afterwards the face drifts of to a depth of approximately 120 metres.

SEEHOTEL DAS TRAUNSEE:
(western shore, in the village of Traunkirchen)
In a depth of 5 metres is a training platform with a railing. In a depth of 10 metres one encounters an exceptional dome that has a resemblance to the roof of a popular car.

LION MONUMENT
(western shore, between Ebensee and Traunkirchen)
A truncated steep face reaches to a depth of approximately 120 metres.

MIESWEG:
(eastern shore, only accessible by boat)
Directly below 1,691m high Traunstein Mountain, a steep face reaches to a depth of 100 metres. This spot can only be dived from boats and if properly adjusted.

WEISSER STEINBRUCH (WHITE QUARRY):
(eastern shore, only accessible by boat)
A vertical steep face reaches to depth of 160 metres.

EISENAU:
(eastern shore, only accessible by boat)
A beautiful and small bay, where there used to be a guesthouse (only the walls of the beer garden are left). Especially charming are the overhanging steep face slopes that start already at a depth of 1 metre and form several metres-deep indentations. If you dive in southern direction you get to a boat at a depth of 20 metres that sank approximately 50 years ago.

THE WALL:
(eastern shore, only accessible by boat)
A charming place that owes its attraction not only to the steep face.

HUNDSGRABEN TRENCH:
(eastern shore, only accessible by boat)
The small bay is shaped like a shark fin and features special features like an echo face and an underwater grotto.

FLEDERMAUSBUCHT (BAT BAY):
(eastern shore, only accessible by boat)
Underwater portal in a depth of 9 metres, steep face

KARBACH:
(eastern shore, only accessible by boat)
This peninsula is the perfect diving spot of the eastern shore – also suitable for groups. A small, even diving area gives also inexperienced divers the opportunity to enjoy this fantastic underwater sport.

Towards the south a steep face (partly with overhangs) ends with vertical drops. Dreissenidae decorate almost all faces of the eastern shore. In the area of Karbachbucht bay tree trunks tower into the darkness and small boat wrecks are used by lake perches and common minnows as shelter. At this dreamlike diving spot is a small snack station.
