Even the Romans recognized the magical effect of the Traunsee and named it “lacus felix”, the happy lake.
Traunsee, Upper Austria, 423m, 24.5sq km, 12km long, 3km wide and 191m deep. After the Attersee it is the second largest lake in the Salzkammergut and the deepest lake in Austria. As a result of its depth, the Traunsee doesn’t often come out of its cold temperature zone, but has incredibly high water quality.
The lake is ideally located in the transition zone between the Alpine foothills and the Alps, bordered by the Höllengebirge range and Rötelstein peak (1,287m, Rötel Lakes) to the southwest and Traunstein peak (1,691m) to the east. The Traun River flows through this magnificent lake.
Lakeshore towns in the north, west and south are the Spa Resort of Gmunden (440m), Altmünster (442m), Mitterndorf (441m), Traunkirchen (443m) and Ebensee (443m). The mostly very steep eastern shore is far less developed.
On a small island near Gmunden there is a small castle village where, among other things, they hold summer festivals. Traunsee Lake offers a variety of options for water sports as well.
